A hollow core can reduce unit mass and provide space for reinforcement or grout. It does not mean the final wall is necessarily unfilled, and it does not mean every cell should be filled. The wall drawings determine which cores, bond beams, and locations receive reinforcement or grout. Openings and connection details can affect where units are solid, cut, or reinforced.

How CMU differs from a poured concrete wall
A CMU wall is assembled course by course from units and mortar joints. A poured wall is cast in forms as a continuous placement of concrete around reinforcement and embedded details as specified. Both systems can serve different building purposes, but their construction sequence, joints, materials, and quantity takeoffs differ.
Do not estimate a hollow CMU wall as though it were a solid rectangular block of concrete. A block count uses face modules and openings; grout is a separate quantity based on the cells designated for filling. A simple quantity example for block layout
Consider a rectangular wall 20 ft long and 8 ft high with no openings. Its face area is 160 ft². Using a standard 8 × 16 in modular face area of 8/9 ft² gives 180 theoretical units before a waste allowance and special pieces. This is an area estimate, not a course-by-course layout or reinforcement schedule.
A doorway or window reduces the net face area for an ordinary block estimate. Special corners, half blocks, lintels, and bond beams may change the product mix. Common applications and design limits
CMU is used in many types of building and site walls, but the block type and assembly are selected for a project. A wall’s height, openings, supports, loads, moisture exposure, fire requirements, and connections affect the design. The presence of hollow cores or reinforcing bars alone does not show how much load a wall can carry.

Start with the wall type shown in the plans. For poured concrete, measure the solid wall geometry and subtract full-depth openings. Keep the two methods separate because block volume and wall volume represent different materials.
