Measure the patio footprint
For a rectangular patio, enter length, width, and thickness. For a circular patio, enter its diameter and thickness; do not enter the radius in the diameter field. If the patio has an L-shaped outline or an extension added to an existing pad, divide it into simple non-overlapping regions or enter the measured area where that path is available. Each piece should represent actual concrete surface, not a bounding rectangle that includes empty corners.
The default thickness field uses inches. A 4 in thickness is one-third of a foot. If you change units, the physical dimensions should stay the same and the labels should change with converted values. If different patio zones have different thicknesses, calculate them separately and add the volumes rather than using one average thickness that hides the distinction. The initial tool result remains empty until you provide valid measurements and calculate.
Formulas for rectangular and circular patios
A rectangular patio volume is length × width × thickness, after all values are in compatible length units. For a circular patio, first divide diameter by two to get radius, then use V = π × radius² × thickness. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27. For several regions, add the net volumes of the individual non-overlapping shapes before applying any allowance.
The patio calculator’s main answer is an order quantity in cubic yards, but it should also retain the net geometric amount. An adjustable 10% planning allowance is shown separately; it is not a mandatory value or a patio thickness recommendation. Finishes such as broom or stamped texture do not change the geometric volume by an invented multiplier. Surface treatment can affect a cost quote, but it does not make the footprint contain more concrete.
Worked example: a round 12-foot patio
A circular patio 12 ft in diameter has a radius of 6 ft. At 4 in thick, or one-third of a foot, the net volume is π × 6² × ⅓ = 12π, approximately 37.699 ft³. Divide by 27 to get about 1.39626 yd³ net. With a 10% material allowance, the order quantity is about 1.53589 yd³.
For QUIKRETE Concrete Mix No. 1101 at approximately 0.60 ft³ yield per 80 lb bag, 37.699 × 1.10 ÷ 0.60 gives about 69.12 bags, so the purchase count rounds up to 70. The example uses a true diameter. Entering 12 ft as a radius would make the calculated circular area four times larger, because radius is squared. Check the dimension label and the outline before relying on the number.
Split an irregular or expanded patio
An L-shaped patio can be measured as two rectangles whose footprints do not overlap. A circular area beside a rectangle can be calculated as a circle plus the non-overlapping rectangular portion. If the new patio extends an existing concrete pad, count only the new placement when that is the amount being ordered. The calculation should show each region and its net volume, then apply the allowance once to their combined total.
Do not add two full shapes when one includes the other. For example, if a 10 ft by 10 ft bounding rectangle includes a 4 ft by 4 ft missing corner, subtract that 16 ft² void or define only the remaining non-overlapping rectangles. If a patio boundary is curved but its area is known, use that area with thickness rather than guessing dimensions from a photograph. Keep the area definition and the thickness visible in the result summary.
Understand the result and buying options
Ready-mix concrete is commonly quoted by volume, so cubic yards are the primary result. Bag equivalents can be useful for a small project or a comparison, but they depend on the exact product yield. The manufacturer’s data sheet lists different yields for different package sizes. A named yield should appear beside the bag count; another brand or product may produce a different amount. This calculator does not include water, mixing labor, tools, delivery, pumping, base materials, or the cost of a finish.
A patio cost estimator can help compare a published planning range for plain, broom, or stamped work, but those finish categories should be mutually exclusive selections. Do not add a stamped range on top of a plain range if the published stamped figure already represents that installed finish category. Keep cost mode separate from the material volume so an installed estimate is not mistakenly combined with a second materials charge.
